Demographic Transition Model:
Italy is currently in Stage 4 of the Demographic Transition Model (DTM). Stage 4 is characterized as having low birth rates, low death rates, and a low Population Growth Rate (PGR), causing the population to stabilize. Countries in this stage are developed, have advanced health care, equality of women in both education and workforce, and there is a widespread use of family planning. Countries that have well educated citizens and employment opportunities fit into this stage as well. (www.geographyfieldwork.com) Italy fits with these characteristics because it is a developed country, has low birth and death rates, and has a low population growth rate, which makes Italy in Stage 4 of the DTM.

Population Situation:
Many factors have contributed to the population growth of Italy including: urbanization, religious beliefs, status of women, and immigration. In the last 50 years, there has been a large increase of immigration towards Italy, especially from Northern Africa, and surrounding European countries. As the Vatican City is located in Italy, and Catholicism has had a major effect on the nation, the population has increased because people want to live where they can worship their Christian beliefs. The status of women also has played a part in the population growth of Italy. Women have almost all of the same rights as men and have the choice of whichever career they want. Over time, Italian women have gained more and more freedom, and today women can be seen doing the same jobs as men. There are even many women in the Italian government. Urbanization (growth of cities) has payed a large role in the population growth. Cities such as Rome, Milan, and Naples have increased over time and many people have immigrated into the country to live in these major cities that are full of culture and job opportunities.

Population Density Map: Why do people live where they do?
In Italy, people mainly live where larger cities are located. The cities of Milan, Naples, and the capital city of Rome are the most highly populated cities throughout Italy. People live in major cities for a number of reasons. First, is that in the larger cities there are more job opportunities. People want to live where they can be close to their source of employment. Impact of the Population on the People and the Environment:
The population of Italy has had an effect on the people and environment of the nation. The population increase has created a depletion of resources in Italy. As the population has gotten larger, urbanization has occurred and has effected the environment. The formation of cities has taken away more and more of the land that could be used for farming and the small amount of areas that have been left are not as fertile. As the population grows it need more crops to be supplied, but because the land has been affected, Italy has had to import more of the food they need. A bright side of the increasing population, is that technology has become more advanced throughout the nation and more creativity has occurred and Italy has become rich in culture.
The population of Italy is made up of:
Italians (96%), North African Arabs (0.9%),
Italo-Albanians (0.8%), Albanians (0.5%), Germans (0.4%),
Austrians (0.4%), Italo-Greeks, French and other (1%)
